A 1795 portrait by Francisco Goya depicting the Duchess of Alba in a white muslin dress, noted for its clear composition and historical detail.
Painted in 1795, this portrait depicts María del Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva y Álvarez de Toledo, the 13th Duchess of Alba. Goya captures the subject in a white muslin dress, a style associated with the 'maja' fashion of the period. The composition is stark, placing the Duchess against a muted, open background that draws attention to her figure. Her attire is punctuated by a bold red sash and matching ribbons in her dark, voluminous hair. A small white dog stands at her feet, wearing a red bow that echoes the colour of her accessories.
Technically, the work demonstrates Goya's ability to render textures, from the sheer, light quality of the muslin to the metallic sheen of the gold bracelets on her arms. The Duchess points towards the ground, where an inscription identifies the sitter and the artist, along with the date. This painting is one of two major portraits Goya produced of the Duchess, the other being the 'Black Duchess' painted in 1797. The 1795 portrait is noted for its relative restraint compared to his later, more expressive works. It remains a primary example of late eighteenth-century Spanish portraiture, reflecting the social status and personal style of the aristocracy during the reign of Charles IV. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Palacio de Liria in Madrid.
