A dramatic lithograph by Eugène Delacroix, depicting the intense duel between Faust and Valentin from his 1828 series illustrating Goethe's Faust.
This lithograph is part of a series created by Eugène Delacroix for a French edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust. Published in 1828, the collection represents a significant moment in the history of book illustration, as Delacroix moved away from traditional academic styles to embrace the emotional intensity associated with Romanticism. The scene depicts the climactic duel between Faust and Valentin, the brother of Gretchen. Delacroix employs dramatic lighting to focus the viewer on the central figures, whose postures convey the tension of the encounter. Mephistopheles stands to the side, observing the conflict with a characteristic air of detachment. The background features a town square rendered with atmospheric perspective, providing a sense of place without distracting from the primary action. Delacroix utilised the medium of lithography to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows cast by the figures to the lighter, textured surfaces of the architecture. The composition is structured to guide the eye across the swords and the physical engagement of the combatants. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to interpret literary narratives through a visual lens, capturing the psychological weight of the scene rather than merely documenting the events described in the text. The print reflects the broader interest in German literature among French artists of the period, as well as the technical possibilities of lithography in the early nineteenth century.
