Description
Dufton in Cumbria places a red stone fountain among pale cottages and green lawns, with yellow daffodils below snowy distant hills in the sharp sunshine of a clear spring afternoon.
This Eden Valley village lies below Great Dun Fell, with houses arranged around an oblong green. Lead mining shaped its development during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The London Lead Company supplied housing and piped water, leaving a fountain and circular trough as a centrepiece of the village.
Dufton has a red stone fountain with a round white finial above a broad circular basin. Sandstone and white cottages face the green beneath slate roofs and tall chimneys. Yellow daffodils fill the near grass under the shadow of a large leafy tree. Snow streaks remain on the distant hills, suggesting a clear spring afternoon in the valley.
