Description
Dulwich in south London offers an intimate view through ornate stone gateways towards a pale historic frontage, with flowering shrubs and spreading tree shadows softening the formal entrance.
South London's village district is known for its early public art gallery, which opened in 1817. Designed by Sir John Soane, the purpose-built gallery reflects a long association with collecting and public access to art, within the leafy surroundings of the older settlement.
Here Dulwich appears through four substantial stone gate piers and black ironwork. A long cream building stands beyond, its slate roof punctuated by tall chimneys and evenly spaced windows. Pink flowering bushes brighten the near lawn, while mature branches arch across the upper left. Fresh leaves and soft lilac cloud shadows suggest late spring, with warm sunlight catching the carved tops of the entrance.
