Description
Dumfries in Dumfries and Galloway spans a blue river with old sandstone arches, while white water breaks over a broad weir below leafy banks and a distant spire in bright summer light.
The historic crossing over the Nith takes its name from Lady Devorgilla, who commissioned a timber bridge in the thirteenth century. Stone arches replaced it in the fifteenth century, followed by flood repairs and later shortening as the riverside town expanded around the crossing.
At Dumfries, rough reddish stone arches reflect in a calm reach above the weir. Foaming water drops across two broad dark ledges in the foreground, edged by long grass and small white flowers. Pale town buildings and a red church spire rise among trees beyond. Bright cream clouds suggest fresh summer sunshine after a passing shower.
