A bold Expressionist woodcut by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, featuring the jagged, rhythmic forms of a coastal dune landscape.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a founding member of the Die Brücke group, produced this woodcut during a period of intense creative output. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the medium, where the physical resistance of the wood block informs the final aesthetic. Kirchner utilised the grain and the sharp, angular cuts to define the coastal topography, prioritising emotional resonance over literal representation.
The composition is dominated by rhythmic, jagged lines that suggest the movement of wind and water against the shoreline. The bay curves sharply, creating a sense of tension between the solid, dark masses of the dunes and the lighter, more fluid areas representing the sea. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Kirchner focuses on the raw energy of the natural environment. The high-contrast black and white palette is typical of his graphic work, which sought to convey the subjective experience of the artist rather than a static observation of the world.
Kirchner often retreated to the Baltic coast to escape the pressures of urban life in Berlin. These coastal scenes allowed him to experiment with simplified forms and bold, graphic structures. This print reflects his interest in the primitive and the direct, qualities he admired in historical woodcuts and non-Western art. The resulting image is a study in balance, where the heavy, dark foliage on the right acts as a counterweight to the sweeping, lighter curves of the bay. It is a clear example of the Expressionist desire to translate the external world into a personal, visual language through the deliberate manipulation of form and shadow.
