Description
Dunnottar crowns a rocky headland on the Aberdeenshire coast near Stonehaven, its ruined fortress standing above steep cliffs and the North Sea where Scotland's crown jewels once found refuge.
South of Stonehaven, a narrow approach connects this coastal fortress to the mainland. Its buildings occupy a rocky promontory above the North Sea, and the castle is remembered for sheltering the Honours of Scotland from Cromwell's forces during the 1650s.
Dunnottar rises beyond a deep inlet, with a rectangular stone keep and broken walls spread over the grassy summit. Grey cliffs drop towards white surf and small strips of sand. A winding sandy path crosses the green foreground, while clear blue water encloses the headland. Fresh grass and bright daylight suggest summer on this exposed shore.
