Description
Dunvegan on Highland Skye reflects a battlemented castle in sheltered blue water, with dark woodland and golden shore weed surrounding the pale walls on their rocky headland.
Dunvegan lies at the head of its namesake sea loch in northwest Skye, between the Duirinish and Waternish peninsulas. The village is closely associated with the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod chiefs. Their castle stands on an elevated rock above the eastern shore, amid gardens and woodland.
The castle’s tall square tower and long crenellated frontage rise above green trees and exposed grey slabs. A slim flagpole extends into the blue sky. Below, calm water repeats the walls in a rippled reflection, broken by broad ochre patches of seaweed. Cream clouds, full foliage and a sunlit grassy bank suggest a clear summer day around the sheltered inlet.
