A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting two Dutch figures engaged in study and trade during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan began to open its ports to international trade, artists documented the appearance and activities of foreigners. Yoshitora, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced numerous works depicting Westerners, often with a blend of observation and imaginative interpretation.
The composition features two figures identified as Dutch, a nationality frequently associated with Western technology and trade in the Japanese consciousness of the time. One man stands, wearing a dark hat and a blue coat, while holding a pipe. The other sits at a table, focused on a book or printing document. The style is characteristic of the period, utilising bold outlines and a flat application of colour. The figures are rendered with a degree of caricature, reflecting the curiosity and unfamiliarity that Japanese artists felt toward their Western visitors.
Textual elements are integrated into the composition, providing context for the viewer. These inscriptions describe the subjects as practitioners of Western arts and sciences, including medicine and printing. The use of a warm, ochre background provides a neutral space that allows the figures to occupy the foreground clearly. The furniture, particularly the chair, is depicted with a simplified, linear quality that emphasises the artist's focus on the human subjects rather than architectural accuracy. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural exchange occurring at the port of Yokohama, capturing a moment of transition in Japanese history as the nation grappled with the influx of foreign influence and technology.
