Wen Boren, a member of the influential Wu School of painting, produced this work in 1561. As the nephew of the master Wen Zhengming, he inherited a tradition of scholarly painting that prioritised technical precision and a deep engagement with the literati aesthetic. This hanging scroll depicts a mountainous terrain, a classic subject within the shan shui tradition, where the natural world serves as a site for contemplation and retreat.

The composition follows a vertical orientation, guiding the eye from the dense, textured foreground of trees and rocky outcrops up towards the towering, cloud-piercing peaks. Wen Boren employs a meticulous brush technique, using small, rhythmic strokes to define the foliage and the craggy surfaces of the mountains. The application of light colour washes adds a subtle dimension to the scene, distinguishing the various layers of vegetation and the distant, misty expanses.
