A classic Futurist work by Giacomo Balla, capturing the rapid motion of a dog and its owner through repetitive, overlapping forms.
Giacomo Balla, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, produced this work in 1912. The painting captures the rapid movement of a dachshund and the feet of its owner as they walk. By repeating the forms of the dog's legs, tail, and the owner's shoes, Balla creates a visual representation of motion across a static surface. This technique, often compared to chronophotography, allows the viewer to perceive the passage of time within a single frame.
The composition is set against a neutral, light-toned background, which draws attention to the dark, rhythmic shapes of the subjects. The repetition of these forms creates a sense of speed and energy, reflecting the Futurist obsession with modern technology, velocity, and the mechanical nature of urban life. Balla avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, graphic approach that prioritises the sensation of movement over anatomical accuracy.
This piece remains a primary example of how early twentieth-century artists attempted to break away from static representation. By deconstructing the act of walking into a series of overlapping silhouettes, Balla invites the viewer to consider the physical experience of motion. The work is held in the collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. It provides a clear window into the experimental methods employed by the Futurists to translate the kinetic energy of the modern world into the medium of oil paint.
