Description
Eardisley in Herefordshire frames a white cottage through massive spreading branches, the contrast between dark bark and neat black beams giving this shaded scene its distinctive visual character.
Herefordshire's Black and White Village Trail includes Eardisley, whose high street retains numerous timber-framed houses. Nearby stands the Great Oak, a hollow veteran tree which the county tourism authority believes may be as much as a thousand years old.
A deeply hollowed trunk dominates the left foreground, its branches stretching across almost the whole scene. White walls and dark timbers brighten the cottages on the opposite side of the road. Beyond their roofs, a green hill closes the distance. The dense canopy and warm ochre light suggest summer, bringing the oak's rough bark into contrast with the neat village frontage.
