A powerful drypoint etching by Lovis Corinth, depicting the biblical Ecce Homo scene with raw, expressive line work.
This print is part of the Ecce Homo cycle, a series of graphic works produced by Lovis Corinth during the First World War. The composition depicts the biblical scene where Pontius Pilate presents a scourged Christ to the crowd. Corinth employs a raw, gestural technique, using dense clusters of drypoint lines to construct the figures. The central figure of Christ is rendered with a sense of physical vulnerability, his posture slumped and his expression weary. The surrounding figures are suggested through rapid, aggressive marks that convey a sense of agitation and psychological weight.
Corinth moved away from the academic realism of his early career, adopting a more subjective approach that aligns with the development of German Expressionism. The stark contrast between the dark, etched lines and the white paper creates a sense of immediacy. The artist often returned to religious themes throughout his life, using them as a vehicle to explore human suffering and mortality. In this specific work, the lack of refined detail forces the viewer to focus on the emotional intensity of the scene rather than anatomical precision. The inscription at the top right, written in a shaky hand, adds to the sense of urgency and personal involvement. This print reflects the artist's late style, which is characterised by a departure from traditional form in favour of expressive power. The work remains a significant example of early twentieth-century printmaking, demonstrating how traditional subjects were reinterpreted through a modern, subjective lens.
