A candid, experimental portrait of Édouard Manet by his contemporary Edgar Degas, featuring an unconventional composition and a unique history of modification.
This portrait depicts the painter Édouard Manet in a relaxed, reclining posture on a sofa. Degas captures his friend and contemporary in a moment of informal repose, contrasting with the formal portraiture typical of the era. The composition is notable for its unconventional cropping: a large, vertical band of unpainted or thinly primed canvas occupies the right side of the frame, partially obscuring a woman standing in a pale blue dress. This deliberate truncation suggests a candid, snapshot-like quality, reflecting the influence of photography and Japanese woodblock prints on Degas's aesthetic.
The colour palette is restrained, dominated by muted greens, soft greys, and the warm, neutral tone of the exposed canvas. Manet is dressed in a dark suit with a light waistcoat, his head resting on his hand in a contemplative gesture. The relationship between the two figures remains ambiguous, adding a narrative tension to the scene. The woman, often identified as Manet's wife, Suzanne Leenhoff, is turned away from the viewer, creating a sense of distance and privacy.
Degas famously disliked this painting, and it is reported that Manet cut off the right side of the canvas, which included the figure of his wife, because he was dissatisfied with how she was depicted. Degas later retrieved the painting and attempted to repair the damage by adding a strip of canvas to the right side, which remains visible today as the unpainted section. This work provides a glimpse into the complex personal and professional dynamics between two of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century French art. It remains a study in artistic temperament and the experimental nature of the Impressionist circle.
