A nocturnal scene in watercolour and gouache by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, 'Een dier in de maan / Un Animal dans la Lune' depicts figures gathered around a structure for observing the moon.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, draughtsman, and engraver. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic depictions of animals and hunting scenes, as well as his still lifes. Oudry served as the director of the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry factories, influencing decorative arts in France. 'Een dier in de maan / Un Animal dans la Lune' presents a nocturnal scene rendered in shades of grey and blue. A group of figures are gathered around a tall structure, possibly a device for observing the moon. One man cranks a wheel at the top of the structure, while others observe or record their findings. The composition is framed by a dark blue border, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene. The use of watercolour and gouache allows for delicate gradations of tone, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere.
