A portrait of a young woman by Dutch painter August Allebé, featuring a restrained palette and expressive, painterly brushwork.
August Allebé, a Dutch painter and later director of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, produced this portrait during a period when his work moved away from strict academic precision toward a more painterly, atmospheric approach. The subject, a young woman, is captured in a three-quarter view against a dark, muted background that draws focus to her figure and the texture of her attire.
Allebé demonstrates a controlled use of the brush, particularly in the rendering of the white garment draped over the woman's arm. The fabric is treated with thick, confident strokes that suggest weight and volume, contrasting with the smoother, more delicate application of paint on the face and hands. Her expression is composed, reflecting the restrained psychological depth often found in Allebé's portraiture. The palette is dominated by earthy greys, deep shadows, and stark whites, creating a sense of quietude and focus.
This work reflects the influence of the mid-nineteenth-century European tradition, where artists began to prioritise the physical quality of paint and the play of light over purely linear representation. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned to occupy the centre of the frame, yet the loose handling of the clothing prevents the image from appearing static. It is a study in texture and light, characteristic of Allebé's technical proficiency during his most active years as a painter. The absence of elaborate surroundings ensures that the viewer engages directly with the subject, whose gaze remains steady and contemplative. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original oil painting, preserving the subtle shifts in colour and the tactile quality of the brushwork.
