Description
Egremont in Cumbria frames green hillside fields through broken castle arches, with warm stone ruins and a distant church tower under cream cloud towers on a bright afternoon during summer.
The castle above this west Cumbrian town preserves twelfth century ruins on the site of an earlier Norman fortification. The first defences followed a motte and bailey plan, using raised ground and an enclosed court. Surviving stonework records the later stronghold’s place in the settlement’s medieval landscape.
Egremont has warm rough stone ruins with two tall pointed openings and a smaller broken arch. Broad steps climb beside the left wall, facing a curved path through close green grass. A church tower rises among pale town roofs beyond the trees, below wooded hills. Cream cloud towers and long lawn shadows suggest a bright summer afternoon around the ruined walls.
