A traditional Chinese ink and colour painting depicting a mountain pavilion, part of an album of eight scenes by Lu Han.
This work is a leaf from an album titled Eight Landscapes, attributed to the artist Lu Han. It depicts the Pavilion of the Old Drunkard, a subject rooted in Chinese literary tradition, specifically the famous essay by Ouyang Xiu. The composition follows the conventions of traditional Chinese ink painting, where the artist balances solid forms with negative space to suggest atmospheric depth.
The scene features rolling hills rendered with soft, layered brushwork, creating a sense of gentle elevation. A small pavilion sits perched on a hillside, overlooking a waterfall that descends into the valley below. In the foreground, figures traverse a path, their presence providing a sense of scale against the natural environment. The inclusion of pine trees and distant, mist-covered peaks aligns with the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising harmony between human activity and the natural world.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on light washes of green and ochre to define the terrain, while ink lines provide structure to the trees and architectural elements. The calligraphy in the upper left corner identifies the subject and provides a date, corresponding to the year 1819. This piece reflects the scholarly tradition of painting, where the artist aims to capture the spirit of a location rather than a precise topographical record. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the print, preserving the delicate balance of the original ink and pigment application. This museum-grade reproduction captures the subtle tonal variations of the original, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the composition's spatial arrangement.
