This work by Nicolaes Muys, dated 1778, captures a scene of leisure typical of the late eighteenth-century Dutch tradition. The composition features a young couple positioned within a garden setting, framed by mature trees that suggest a private, secluded environment. The woman is seated, wearing a gown with a full skirt, while the man stands beside her, placing a floral garland upon her head. A stone plinth supports a large decorative urn, upon which a peacock perches, adding a touch of aristocratic artifice to the scene.
Muys employs a delicate application of watercolour and ink to define the figures and their surroundings. The inclusion of a lute resting on the ground and a basket of flowers nearby reinforces the theme of courtly romance and pastoral recreation. The palette remains restrained, relying on soft blues, muted pinks, and earthy greens to establish the atmosphere of a quiet afternoon.
