A sun-drenched study of the artist's daughter, Elena, standing on the rocky shores of a Majorcan cove, captured with fluid, light-filled brushwork.
Joaquín Sorolla, a master of Mediterranean light, captured this scene during his time in Majorca. The painting depicts his daughter, Elena, standing upon the rocks of a secluded cove. Sorolla utilised his characteristic rapid brushwork to document the fleeting effects of sunlight on the water and the surrounding cliffs. The composition focuses on the contrast between the figure in her white dress and the warm, golden tones of the coastal environment.
Sorolla often painted his family members in outdoor settings, allowing him to explore the interplay of shadow and illumination. In this work, the figure is positioned slightly off-centre, drawing the eye toward the water and the distant cliff face. The palette consists of earthy ochres, soft whites, and cool blues, reflecting the specific atmospheric conditions of the Spanish coast. The artist avoided rigid outlines, preferring to define forms through the application of colour and tone. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is witnessing a momentary pause in a summer afternoon.
By the time this work was produced, Sorolla had refined his ability to translate the intensity of the sun into paint. The water, rendered with fluid, gestural strokes, appears to shimmer, while the rocks provide a solid, grounding element to the scene. The inclusion of the hat held by the subject adds a casual, human element to the composition. This piece demonstrates the artist's focus on natural observation, prioritising the sensory experience of the location over formal portraiture conventions. It remains a clear example of his ability to merge human presence with the natural world, maintaining a balance between the subject and the environment.
