An early history painting by Albert Joseph Moore, depicting the biblical narrative of Elijah's sacrifice with dramatic figures and earthy tones.

Elijah's Sacrifice, painted in 1863, represents an early phase in the career of Albert Joseph Moore. Before he became known for his decorative, classical figures, Moore engaged with the tradition of history painting. This work depicts the biblical narrative from the First Book of Kings, where the prophet Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest of faith. The scene captures the moment fire descends from heaven to consume the offering, leaving the gathered figures in a state of physical and emotional reaction. The composition is arranged in a frieze-like manner, a characteristic that would persist in Moore's later work. The figures are grouped across the foreground, their bodies contorted in various poses of awe, fear, and supplication. Moore employs a muted, earthy palette, dominated by ochres, browns, and deep greens, which grounds the scene in a rugged, arid environment. The flames, rendered with controlled brushwork, provide the primary source of light and movement within the otherwise static arrangement of figures. Unlike his later, more stylised compositions, this piece demonstrates a focus on anatomical accuracy and dramatic narrative. The figures are rendered with a degree of realism that reflects the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, with whom Moore had associations during his early years in London. The background, consisting of stark, rocky hills, serves to isolate the event, focusing the viewer's attention on the central interaction between the divine fire and the human subjects. This painting offers a glimpse into the formative period of an artist who would eventually move away from narrative subjects toward the pursuit of pure aesthetic harmony.
