A conceptual work by Kees de Goede featuring the historic 1898 front page of L'Aurore, which published Émile Zola's famous open letter, J'accuse...!
This work by Dutch artist Kees de Goede engages with the historical weight of the Dreyfus Affair through the lens of the original 1898 publication of Émile Zola's open letter, J'accuse...!. The piece incorporates the physical front page of the newspaper L'Aurore, which famously carried Zola's condemnation of the French government's handling of the case. By selecting this specific document, the artist draws attention to the intersection of journalism, political dissent, and the printed word as a vehicle for social change.
De Goede often employs found materials and historical ephemera to construct his compositions. In this instance, the aged paper and the dense, columned typography of the late nineteenth-century French press provide a textured backdrop for his conceptual exploration. The work functions as a physical archive, preserving the visual character of the period while inviting the viewer to consider the act of protest. The layout of the newspaper, with its advertisements for contemporary goods of the era juxtaposed against the gravity of Zola's accusations, creates a tension between the mundane and the monumental.
As a contemporary interpretation, the piece does not merely replicate the historical document. Instead, it recontextualises the newspaper as an object of art. The visual presence of the text, with its varied font sizes and structured columns, creates a rhythmic pattern across the surface. This approach allows the viewer to observe the document as both a historical relic and a formal composition. The work invites reflection on the power of public discourse and the role of the intellectual in challenging institutional authority. Through this careful selection and presentation, the artist maintains a dialogue with the past, ensuring the document remains a subject of active engagement rather than a static historical footnote.
