A atmospheric conté crayon drawing by Charles Angrand, capturing the quiet silhouettes of haystacks in a French field at dusk.
Charles Angrand, a key figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work using conté crayon. The medium allows for a soft, atmospheric quality that defines his graphic output. In this composition, Angrand captures the quiet aftermath of agricultural labour. The silhouettes of haystacks form a rhythmic line across the field, receding into the distance. A horse and cart appear as faint shapes on the horizon, suggesting the final stages of the harvest process.
Angrand was known for his mastery of light and shadow, often referred to as chiaroscuro in his drawings. He avoids sharp outlines, preferring instead to build form through subtle gradations of tone. The paper texture interacts with the crayon to create a granular, hazy effect, which mimics the appearance of dust or mist settling over the land at dusk. This approach removes specific detail, focusing the viewer on the mood and the weight of the forms against the sky.
Unlike his pointillist paintings, which rely on the optical mixing of distinct dots of colour, these drawings demonstrate a different technical rigour. Angrand uses the density of the crayon to control the luminosity of the scene. The bright areas are achieved by leaving the paper surface exposed, while the darkest regions are heavily worked. This creates a sense of depth without the need for traditional perspective lines. The result is a contemplative image that captures a fleeting moment in the French countryside. It reflects the artist's interest in the quiet, repetitive nature of rural life, rendered with a sensitivity to the physical properties of his materials.
