A satirical lithograph from the 'Histoire Ancienne' series, depicting the classical figures of Aeneas and Dido caught in a rainstorm.
This lithograph is part of the series 'Histoire Ancienne', published in the Parisian journal Le Charivari in 1842. Honoré Daumier, a master of social and political commentary, turns his attention to classical mythology, specifically the epic tale of Aeneas and Dido from Virgil's Aeneid. Rather than depicting the figures with the heroic grandeur typical of academic painting, Daumier presents them as ordinary, somewhat bedraggled individuals caught in a torrential downpour.
The visual humour relies on the contrast between the elevated subject matter and the mundane reality of the scene. Aeneas, wearing a helmet that appears slightly too large, leads Dido through a storm. The rain is rendered with sharp, diagonal lines that dominate the composition, creating a sense of chaotic weather that disrupts the dignity of the classical protagonists. Dido follows him, her posture suggesting a lack of grace as they navigate the elements. The inclusion of the caption below the image, which mocks the lack of an umbrella during their retreat into a cave, reinforces the satirical intent.
Daumier uses his characteristic expressive line work to define the figures and the environment. His ability to capture movement and character through minimal strokes is evident here. The lithographic process allows for a range of grey tones, which he employs to suggest the gloom of the storm. This work demonstrates his approach to demystifying historical and mythological figures, bringing them down to the level of the contemporary Parisian public. It is a fine example of how nineteenth-century print culture used humour to engage with classical literature, stripping away the veneer of antiquity to reveal human fallibility.
