An engraving by Abraham de Bruyn documenting the attire of an English courtier and a Yeoman of the Guard from the late sixteenth century.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two distinct figures of the English court, presented as a study of period attire and social rank. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver active in Antwerp, produced this work as part of a broader series documenting international costume. The left figure represents a courtier, mounted on horseback and dressed in the elaborate fashion of the late sixteenth century, complete with a ruff and structured doublet. The right figure depicts a Yeoman of the Guard, identifiable by his specific military regalia and posture.
The composition is typical of sixteenth-century costume books, which functioned as visual catalogues for an audience interested in the diversity of European dress. De Bruyn employs a precise, linear technique, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the fabric and the musculature of the horses. The figures are isolated against a minimal background, focusing the viewer's attention on the details of the garments.
This print provides a record of the sartorial standards of the Elizabethan era. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions beneath the figures identifies their roles, a common practice in pedagogical or ethnographic print series of the period. Despite the significant paper loss and degradation surrounding the central images, the remaining impressions retain the clarity of the original copperplate work. The engraving reflects the technical skill of the Antwerp school, where printmaking served as a primary medium for the dissemination of visual information across the continent. This piece is a document of historical fashion, capturing the rigid social hierarchies and the aesthetic preferences of the English court during the late sixteenth century.
