A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting two English men dining, created by Utagawa Yoshitora during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the appearance and customs of foreigners. These prints provided a curious public with visual information about Westerners, who were often depicted with exaggerated features or unfamiliar attire.
In this composition, two men are seated at a small round table, engaged in a meal. The artist focuses on the details of their Western clothing, including the bowler hat and the structured jackets. The man on the right wears spectacles and holds a book or menu, while the man on the left sits in a red chair, holding a glass. The table is covered with a blue cloth and set with various vessels. The bamboo-style chairs suggest a blend of Western furniture design and Japanese craftsmanship.
The print features a cartouche in the upper left corner, which identifies the subject as English. The style is characteristic of Yoshitora, who was a prolific designer of these foreign-themed prints. The lines are clear and defined, typical of the woodblock medium, and the colour palette remains relatively restrained. The composition is flat, prioritising the legibility of the figures and their accessories over realistic spatial depth. This work offers a glimpse into the cultural exchange and observation that defined the mid-nineteenth century in Japan, capturing a moment of cross-cultural encounter through the lens of traditional printmaking techniques.
