A mid-nineteenth-century woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting an Englishwoman on horseback, created during the era of Japanese port openings.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the mid-nineteenth century following the opening of Japanese ports to foreign trade. These prints functioned as visual reportage, documenting the appearance, customs, and technology of the foreigners who arrived in Japan.
The subject is an Englishwoman depicted in a riding habit, mounted on a horse. The artist employs the characteristic flat colour planes and bold outlines associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition. The figure is rendered with a degree of stylisation that reflects the Japanese perception of Westerners at the time. Her attire, including the bonnet and the structured bodice, is interpreted through the lens of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques. The horse is depicted with a simplified anatomy, consistent with the aesthetic conventions of the period.
Yoshitora was a prolific student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became particularly known for his depictions of foreign subjects. These works were produced in large numbers to satisfy the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the outside world. The print features the typical cartouches containing the title and the artist's signature, alongside the publisher's seal. The colour palette is restrained, relying on traditional mineral pigments that have aged to produce the characteristic warm, muted tones seen on the paper today. This piece provides a record of the cultural exchange and the fascination with Western modernity that defined the Bakumatsu period in Japan.
