The composition features a woman resting upon a low wooden bench, a common setting for summer leisure in the Edo period. She holds a handheld fan, a functional accessory used to seek relief from the heat, which provides the thematic basis for the title. Her posture is relaxed, with one hand placed on the woven surface of the bench and the other holding the fan, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation or respite.
