A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting women enjoying a boat ride beneath a bridge during the summer.
Kitagawa Utamaro is widely recognised for his mastery of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. This woodblock print captures a scene of leisure during the Edo period, where figures seek respite from the summer heat near the water. The composition utilises the architectural elements of a bridge to frame the subjects, creating a sense of depth while maintaining the characteristic flatness of the Ukiyo-e style.
Two women are seated within a boat, one holding a large parasol that provides shade and serves as a visual anchor for the central figures. Their attire, featuring patterned kimonos and elaborate hairstyles, reflects the fashion of the time. A third figure stands nearby, holding a long pole, suggesting the movement of the boat along the river. The artist employs a refined line quality to define the facial features and the folds of the fabric, demonstrating his technical precision. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones for the background structures and the water, which allows the red accents in the clothing to draw the eye.
Utamaro often experimented with unconventional compositions, and here he balances the vertical lines of the bridge supports with the organic shapes of the boat and the figures. The scene conveys a quiet atmosphere, typical of the genre's interest in the daily lives and social customs of urban dwellers in Edo. By focusing on the interaction between the figures and their environment, the work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period. The print remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine technical skill with a keen observation of human posture and gesture, resulting in a balanced and harmonious image.
