A refined woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, capturing a serene evening scene of leisure by the Sumida River in Edo.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicts a scene of leisure at the Ryogoku district in Edo. As a master of the benizuri-e technique, Toyonobu utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments to create visual interest within his compositions. The work belongs to a set of three, capturing the social customs of the period where residents sought relief from the summer heat near the Sumida River.
The composition features figures arranged in a relaxed manner, seated on wooden platforms beneath a willow tree. The artist focuses on the grace of the figures, with particular attention given to the patterns of their kimono and their posture. The inclusion of household objects, such as a portable stove and a fan, provides context for the evening activity. The text integrated into the print serves as both a decorative element and a narrative component, typical of the mid-eighteenth-century ukiyo-e tradition.
Toyonobu was a significant figure in the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. His work often displays a sense of balance and a refined approach to line work. By choosing to represent a common social scene, the print offers a view into the daily life of Edo society. The use of negative space and the placement of the figures suggest a calm atmosphere, consistent with the theme of enjoying the evening cool. The print remains a representative example of the technical and aesthetic standards of the period, demonstrating the shift toward multi-colour printing before the full emergence of nishiki-e.
