A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting two kabuki actors enjoying a cool summer evening by the water near the Nabeshima warehouses.
This woodblock print by Jukakudō Masakuni captures a scene of leisure during the Edo period. The composition depicts two kabuki actors relaxing on a wooden platform, a common setting for summer evening socialising known as yūsuzumi. The figures wear yukata, the light cotton robes typical of the season, and hold folding fans to combat the humidity. Their expressions and postures suggest a pause in conversation, providing a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the time.
In the background, the artist renders the warehouses of the Nabeshima clan, positioned along a waterway. Small boats drift on the water, adding to the sense of quiet activity. The night sky is filled with a dense pattern of stars, rendered in a stylised manner that contrasts with the more grounded depiction of the figures and architecture. The print employs a limited palette, relying on shades of blue, cream, and black to establish the nocturnal atmosphere. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the architectural details of the warehouses.
Jukakudō Masakuni, active during the early 19th century, produced works that often featured actors in various settings. This print belongs to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which were popular among the urban population of Edo. These prints functioned as both souvenirs and promotional material for the theatre. The inclusion of the Nabeshima warehouses provides a specific geographical context, grounding the theatrical subjects within the physical reality of the city. The work demonstrates the technical skill of the woodblock carvers and printers of the era, who managed the registration of multiple colour blocks to create a cohesive image. The overall effect is one of calm, capturing a fleeting moment of respite from the heat of a summer night.
