John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. Though best known for portraits, Sargent also produced significant murals, including those at the Boston Public Library. 'Entering the War' is one panel from a series of murals titled 'Triumph of Religion'. The mural depicts a procession of soldiers marching towards battle, led by a figure representing the United States. Above them flies an American flag and a bald eagle, symbols of national pride and strength. The figures are rendered in muted tones, giving the scene a solemn and dignified air. The mural's composition, with its upward movement and heroic figures, evokes a sense of purpose and resolve. The inscription at the bottom reads: 'They crossed the sea crusaders keen to help the nations battling in a righteous cause'.
