A fine art print of a classical Ottoman epitaph, featuring the refined Thuluth script of master calligrapher Sheikh Hamdullah.
This work represents the refined aesthetic of Ottoman calligraphy, specifically the Thuluth script, which reached a high level of technical precision under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdullah. As a master calligrapher, Hamdullah transformed the visual language of the Ottoman Empire, moving away from the earlier Yaquti style towards a more balanced and fluid form. His influence on the development of the Ottoman school of calligraphy remained consistent for centuries.
The composition features gold-leaf lettering set against a dark, recessed background, creating a clear contrast that aids legibility. The text is arranged within horizontal registers, separated by decorative geometric motifs. Each character demonstrates the controlled pressure and rhythmic flow characteristic of Hamdullah's hand. The script exhibits a harmonious proportion between the vertical strokes and the curved elements, a hallmark of his reform of the traditional scripts.
This epitaph serves as an example of the integration of text and architecture in the Islamic tradition. The precision of the carving reflects the high status of the calligraphic arts in the Ottoman court. By standardising the proportions of the letters, Hamdullah created a system that allowed for both clarity and artistic expression. The work provides a view into the funerary art of the period, where the written word was used to commemorate the deceased through religious verses and formal tributes. The balance between the gilded surfaces and the negative space demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of visual hierarchy, ensuring that the message remains the primary focus of the viewer.
