Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, produced this work during the height of the Roman Baroque period. The composition draws from Torquato Tasso's epic poem, Gerusalemme Liberata. It depicts the princess Erminia, who has fled Jerusalem, encountering a group of shepherds in a rural setting. The narrative focus is secondary to the construction of the environment, which reflects the artist's interest in the idealised classical tradition.

The scene is structured with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background. To the left, a shepherd tends to his flock, while the right side features a large, solitary tree framing the interaction between Erminia and the pastoral figures. The background recedes into a series of rolling hills and distant mountains, rendered with atmospheric perspective. The sky is filled with heavy, dramatic clouds, typical of the period's interest in natural phenomena as a means to convey mood.

Domenichino employs a balanced palette of earth tones, greens, and muted blues. The light is soft, illuminating the figures while casting the surrounding terrain in shadow. This approach to light and space influenced later painters of the classical tradition, including Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. The work is a study in the harmony between human figures and the natural world, a common theme in seventeenth-century Italian art. The figures are rendered with precise anatomical detail, consistent with the artist's training in the Accademia degli Incamminati. The painting remains a representative example of the Bolognese school's approach to narrative painting, where the setting is as essential to the story as the characters themselves.
