A detailed Flemish engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting the biblical narrative of Jacob and Esau, featuring multiple scenes and Latin text.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicts the biblical narrative of Jacob and Esau. The composition follows a structured, multi-scene format common in late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking. The primary scene occupies the lower register, showing the moment Esau trades his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of pottage. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled lines, reflecting the technical discipline of the Antwerp school of engravers.
Above the main scene, three circular medallions provide additional context for the narrative. The left medallion shows Isaac blessing Jacob, while the centre medallion illustrates Jacob's dream of the ladder. The right medallion depicts Jacob meeting Rachel. These secondary scenes create a visual summary of the brothers' history, framed by architectural elements that suggest a classical influence. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a didactic element, typical of the period's approach to religious imagery.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers, worked in a style that prioritised clarity and narrative legibility. The work demonstrates the influence of the designer, Crispijn van den Broeck, whose name appears as 'Crispin inven' on the plate. The print exhibits the characteristic cross-hatching and tonal variation achieved through the burin, allowing for a sense of volume and depth within the figures and their surroundings. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the Low Countries, where biblical stories were frequently reproduced for both devotional and educational purposes. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of the print trade in Antwerp, where designers, engravers, and publishers worked in concert to produce high-quality works for a broad audience.
