A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical coronation of Esther by King Ahasuerus within a classical architectural setting.
This hand-coloured engraving depicts a scene from the Book of Esther, specifically the moment Esther is chosen and crowned by King Ahasuerus. Hans Collaert the Elder, a prominent member of the Antwerp school of engravers, demonstrates his technical precision through the fine lines and structured composition characteristic of the period. The work is part of a larger series illustrating biblical narratives, often produced for collectors who valued both the theological subject matter and the aesthetic quality of the print.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. In the background, the royal court is shown with architectural clarity, featuring classical columns and arches that suggest a Renaissance interpretation of ancient Persian settings. The foreground focuses on the human drama: the king sits upon his throne, placing the crown upon Esther, while courtiers and attendants observe the event. To the right, a separate narrative thread unfolds, showing figures interacting near a heavy curtain, which adds a sense of depth and theatricality to the scene. The hand-colouring applied to the print uses a palette typical of sixteenth-century book illustrations, with clear distinctions between the garments of the figures and the surrounding architecture.
Collaert’s work reflects the influence of contemporary Flemish artists who sought to balance narrative clarity with decorative detail. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image provides the necessary context for the viewer, a common practice in the production of such engravings. This print offers a glimpse into the methods of sixteenth-century printmaking, where the collaboration between the designer and the publisher, in this instance Gerard de Jode, was essential for the dissemination of visual stories. The work remains a fine example of the craftsmanship found in the workshops of Antwerp, which were then the centre of the European print trade.
