Description
Etal in Northumberland is linked to a castle guarding the River Till, while this village scene turns towards a thatched stone cottage, flower borders and a path enclosed by greenery.
A medieval castle beside a ford of the Till anchors Etal's history in northern Northumberland. Built for the Manners family during the fourteenth century, it was taken by James IV's army in 1513, shortly before the Scottish defeat at nearby Flodden.
A small stone cottage faces a narrow garden path beneath a broad thatched roof and two brick chimneys. Pink, purple and cream flower spikes gather along its front lawn. A pale picket fence guides the eye towards the dark green door, with leafy branches framing both sides. Abundant blooms suggest summer in clear, soft daylight.
