A modernist study of Mediterranean flora by Moïse Kisling, featuring the distinct forms of a eucalyptus and a palm tree in the French Riviera.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, produced this work during his time in the south of France. The painting captures the distinct flora of the Mediterranean region, focusing on the sculptural form of a central eucalyptus tree set against a towering palm. Kisling applies a precise, almost clinical approach to the foliage, contrasting the smooth, pale bark of the eucalyptus with the textured, fibrous trunk of the palm.
The composition is structured with a clear sense of order. The trees occupy the foreground, creating a vertical rhythm that draws the eye upward toward the sky. Kisling employs a specific palette of cool greens, earthy ochres, and deep blues, which reflects the intense light of the French Riviera. His technique avoids the loose brushwork common in earlier impressionist interpretations of the region, opting instead for a controlled, deliberate application of paint that defines the volume and mass of each element.
While Kisling is often associated with his portraiture, his botanical studies reveal a similar attention to form and surface. The light in this piece is even and clear, casting soft shadows across the ground and emphasising the physical presence of the trees. The work avoids decorative excess, maintaining a focus on the structural reality of the subject matter. It provides a glimpse into the artist's engagement with the natural environment during his most active years in Sanary-sur-Mer, where he spent significant time observing the local vegetation. This print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the clarity of Kisling's lines and the balance of his colour choices.
