A delicate Ukiyo-e depiction of a scene from the Yugao chapter of The Tale of Genji, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This work by Kawamata Tsunemasa depicts a scene from the fourth chapter of The Tale of Genji, titled Yugao or Evening Faces. The narrative concerns the protagonist, Hikaru Genji, and his encounter with a mysterious woman living in a dilapidated mansion. The artist captures the quiet, atmospheric tension of the encounter, focusing on the figures within a garden setting. The composition employs the traditional Japanese aesthetic of flattened space, where the figures are placed against a neutral, warm-toned background that suggests the fading light of dusk.
Kawamata Tsunemasa, a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, demonstrates a refined approach to line and colour. The figures are rendered with delicate, precise brushwork, characteristic of the mid-eighteenth-century style. The woman on the left wears a complex, patterned robe, while her companion is dressed in more subdued, structured garments. The inclusion of the yugao flowers, which bloom at night, provides a subtle botanical reference to the chapter title. The surrounding elements, such as the rustic fence and the gnarled tree, serve to frame the interaction without overwhelming the central subjects. The muted palette, dominated by earthy ochres, soft greens, and touches of red, maintains a sense of historical authenticity and visual harmony.
This piece reflects the enduring cultural interest in Murasaki Shikibu's eleventh-century literary classic during the Edo period. Artists frequently turned to these narratives to explore themes of romance, melancholy, and the passage of time. By isolating this specific moment, Tsunemasa invites the viewer to consider the narrative depth of the original text through a visual medium. The work is a fine example of how classical literature informed the artistic output of the period, bridging the gap between written word and visual representation.
