This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a rainy evening at Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance. The work exemplifies the ukiyo-e tradition of capturing everyday scenes with atmospheric sensitivity.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. He is best known for his horizontal-format prints of natural subjects, particularly birds and flowers. Hiroshige's approach was poetic and atmospheric, using subtle colours and evocative compositions to capture the mood of a scene. His work had a marked influence on European artists, including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. 'Evening Shower at Nihonbashi Bridge' depicts a scene in Edo (present-day Tokyo). Pedestrians with umbrellas cross the bridge during a downpour. The rain is represented by fine vertical lines, and the sky is a muted orange. In the background, Mount Fuji is visible in the distance. The composition is carefully balanced, with the bridge and figures in the foreground providing a sense of depth. The print captures a fleeting moment in time, conveying the atmosphere of a sudden summer shower.
