A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting the serene winter scene of Mt. Hira from the Eight Views of Omi series.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the classic theme of Evening Snow on Mt. Hira, a subject derived from the Eight Views of Omi. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating his studio in Edo during the first half of the eighteenth century. He is credited with mentoring later masters such as Harunobu and Toyonobu, and his work reflects the transition from early monochrome prints to the hand-coloured urushi-e style.
The composition employs a vertical format, characteristic of the period, which allows for a layered narrative. In the foreground, figures are depicted in daily activity, providing a human scale to the scene. The middle ground features a stilted structure extending over water, a common architectural motif in Japanese prints of this era. The background suggests the mountainous terrain of Omi province, rendered with simplified forms that prioritise clarity over realistic depth. The lines are precise and calligraphic, typical of the early woodblock technique where the artist relied on the strength of the ink outline.
As an urushi-e, or lacquer print, this work would have been hand-coloured by the publisher or the artist. The limited palette of soft yellows and muted tones complements the stark black outlines. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy at the top of the print serves both a decorative and informative purpose, identifying the series and the specific view. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the natural beauty of the Japanese provinces was frequently interpreted through the lens of classical poetry and traditional artistic conventions. The print remains a clear example of the technical and stylistic foundations upon which the later, more complex Ukiyo-e movement was built.
