A seminal conceptual artist book by Edward Ruscha, documenting the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles through a systematic, accordion-folded series of photographs.
Every Building on the Sunset Strip is a seminal artist book by Edward Ruscha, first published in 1966. The work consists of a continuous accordion-folded strip of black and white photographs, documenting both sides of the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Ruscha captured these images using a motorised camera mounted to the back of a pickup truck, maintaining a consistent distance from the kerb to create a systematic, deadpan record of the urban environment.
The book rejects traditional notions of artistic composition or subjective interpretation. Instead, it presents the architecture of the street as a series of serial, objective data points. By stripping away the romanticism often associated with the Los Angeles cityscape, Ruscha focuses on the mundane reality of commercial facades, signage, and parking lots. The typography on the cover, bold and utilitarian, reflects the same clinical approach found within the pages.
This project occupies a specific place in the history of 20th-century art, marking a shift towards the use of the book format as a primary medium for conceptual practice. It functions as a portable archive, allowing the viewer to navigate the length of the street through the physical act of unfolding the paper. The work remains a study in the documentation of the everyday, prioritising the process of collection over the aesthetic quality of individual frames. Its influence extends to contemporary photography and architectural theory, where it is frequently cited for its rigorous, repetitive methodology and its refusal to impose a narrative structure upon the subject matter. The print offered here captures the stark, graphic quality of the original publication, maintaining the clean lines and minimalist presentation that define Ruscha's approach to the urban vernacular.
