A refined woodcut bookplate by Dutch artist Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, featuring a classic agrarian scene of a farmer and ox.
This bookplate, or ex libris, by the Dutch artist Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, demonstrates the graphic clarity associated with the turn-of-the-century European print movement. Roland Holst was a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts, known for his work in book design and illustration. This particular piece features a farmer guiding an ox-drawn plough, a motif that reflects the agrarian symbolism often employed by artists of the period to suggest themes of labour and connection to the land.
The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, with the lettering integrated directly into the base of the design. The typography is stylised, echoing the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement and the emerging Art Nouveau aesthetic, where text and image share a unified graphic space. The contrast between the black ink and the paper surface is sharp, allowing the bold lines of the ox and the figure to remain legible despite the small scale of the work.
Roland Holst often utilised these small-scale commissions to experiment with symbolic imagery. The act of ploughing is rendered with a focus on the physical exertion of the figures, using simplified forms that prioritise silhouette over anatomical detail. This approach aligns with the wider European interest in woodcut techniques during the 1890s, which sought to move away from the photographic realism of the previous era in favour of a more direct, expressive graphic language. The work remains a fine example of the period's dedication to the total design of the book, where even the owner's mark was considered an opportunity for artistic expression.
