A refined Art Nouveau bookplate by Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof, featuring a heraldic shield with birds and decorative foliage.
This woodcut by Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof is a fine example of Dutch Art Nouveau graphic design. Created as a bookplate, or ex libris, for Jeltje de Bosch Kemper, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of stylised form and balanced composition. The design features a central lozenge containing two birds facing one another, set against a dark background. Above this, a helmet and elaborate, flowing acanthus-like foliage provide a decorative crest. The lettering, positioned below the shield, is integrated into the overall graphic scheme, reflecting the period's interest in the unity of text and image. Dijsselhof was a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts, known for his work in wood engraving and his association with the Nieuwe Kunst movement. His approach to this bookplate is characteristic of his broader output, which often drew upon natural motifs rendered with a high degree of stylisation. The clean lines and the contrast between the black ink and the paper support create a clear, legible image suitable for its intended function as a mark of ownership in a personal library. The monogram at the base provides a final, balanced element to the composition, anchoring the design. This print captures the aesthetic priorities of the late nineteenth century, where the design of everyday objects, such as bookplates, received the same attention as fine art. The work is devoid of unnecessary clutter, relying instead on the strength of its silhouette and the rhythmic quality of the foliage. It remains a representative piece of the Dutch graphic tradition, showing how artists of the time adapted historical heraldic forms to suit a modern, decorative sensibility.
