A masterful chiaroscuro woodcut by Nicolas Le Sueur, depicting the dramatic expulsion of the rebel angels based on a design by Tintoretto.
This chiaroscuro woodcut by Nicolas Le Sueur depicts the dramatic expulsion of the rebel angels from heaven. The composition is based on a drawing by Tintoretto, a master of the Venetian Renaissance, whose influence is evident in the dynamic, muscular figures and the sense of kinetic energy captured in the descent. Le Sueur, a skilled French printmaker, employs the chiaroscuro technique to translate the tonal depth of the original drawing into a printed medium. By using multiple woodblocks to layer shades of brown and cream, he achieves a sculptural quality that defines the anatomy of the falling figures and the ethereal light surrounding the victorious angel above.
The print captures a moment of intense physical struggle. The rebel angels are shown in a chaotic tumble, their bodies twisted in mid-air as they are cast downwards. In contrast, the figure above remains poised and authoritative, wielding a sword with precision. The use of light and shadow creates a clear separation between the celestial realm and the darkness of the fall. The lines are fluid and expressive, reflecting the preparatory nature of the original study while maintaining the technical rigour required for high-quality printmaking in the eighteenth century.
Le Sueur was well-regarded for his ability to reproduce the works of Italian masters for the Crozat collection, a project that aimed to document the finest drawings of the era. This print demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing the spirit of the Renaissance through the medium of the woodcut. The work is a fine example of how printmaking allowed for the wider dissemination of artistic ideas during the Enlightenment. It remains a study in movement, anatomy, and the effective use of limited colour palettes to convey complex narrative themes.
