A dramatic 1847 oil painting by Alexandre Cabanel depicting the fallen angel Lucifer in a moment of intense emotional defiance.
Alexandre Cabanel produced this work in 1847, during his time in Rome as a recipient of the Prix de Rome. The painting depicts Lucifer, the fallen angel, in a moment of intense internal conflict. His posture is one of defiance and sorrow, with his arms shielding his face, yet his eyes peer out with a gaze of burning resentment. The composition is structured around the muscular, reclining figure of the angel, whose anatomy is rendered with the precision typical of the French Academic tradition.
Behind the central figure, a group of celestial beings is visible in the upper background, their forms painted with softer, more ethereal brushwork. This contrast between the grounded, physical presence of the fallen angel and the distant, hazy figures of the heavens emphasises his separation from the divine realm. The colour palette is dominated by cool blues in the sky and shadows, which serve to make the warm, flesh tones of the angel stand out. The rocky outcrop upon which he rests provides a stark, earthy base for the composition.
Cabanel was a master of the Academic style, and this piece demonstrates his ability to combine classical anatomical study with the emotional intensity associated with Romantic themes. The work is held in the collection of the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. It remains a notable example of 19th-century French painting, capturing a psychological depth that moves beyond simple narrative illustration. The tension in the angel's hands and the furrowed brow suggest a character caught between pride and despair, a subject that Cabanel explored with technical rigour and dramatic flair.
