Description
Falls of Shin in Highland Sutherland surges between dark rocky banks and green woodland, with broad white cascades and blue pools filling the close river view in soft summer light.
The River Shin flows south from Loch Shin near Lairg towards the Kyle of Sutherland. Along the way, a rocky drop creates one of the north’s well known salmon watching sites. Migrating fish attempt the falls as they move upstream, with woodland paths providing access to the riverbank.
At Falls of Shin, a white upper cascade drops between tall grey walls into a broad blue pool. Water then spreads across low rounded ledges, building into larger rolls of foam towards the foreground. Green leaves overhang both banks, softening the broken stone. A low dark hill and thin cream clouds appear beyond the treetops, suggesting a mild summer day after rain.
