A delicate seventeenth-century chalk drawing by Jan van Noordt, depicting a family group with a lamb in a pastoral setting.
This drawing by Jan van Noordt captures a family group in a relaxed, pastoral arrangement. The composition features a man, a woman, and two children, accompanied by a lamb. Van Noordt, a Dutch painter active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century, demonstrates his facility with chalk on tinted paper here. The use of grey paper allows the artist to employ white chalk for highlights, creating volume in the figures and the folds of their garments.
The figures are arranged in a horizontal line, a common convention for group portraiture of the period. The inclusion of the lamb introduces an allegorical or pastoral element, often used in Dutch art to signify innocence or domestic virtue. Van Noordt employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the contours of the faces and the drapery. The expressions are gentle, reflecting the social aspirations of the Dutch merchant class who commissioned such works to document their family life.
Van Noordt was known for his portraits and history paintings, often influenced by the work of Rembrandt and his contemporaries. This study shows his ability to balance formal portraiture with a sense of naturalism. The drawing provides a glimpse into the techniques used by seventeenth-century artists to prepare for larger oil paintings. The soft transitions between light and shadow, achieved through the layering of chalk, give the figures a tangible presence. This print reproduces the original drawing, preserving the texture of the paper and the delicate marks made by the artist. It is a piece that documents the domestic ideals of the Dutch Golden Age, presented with the clarity and restraint characteristic of the era.
