A refined composition by Shibata Zeshin featuring folding fans and seasonal flowers set against a gold-leaf background.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his technical precision and his ability to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with the changing tastes of the Meiji era. This work features two folding screens, or byobu, which provide a neutral, gilded backdrop for the arrangement of folding fans and botanical elements. The composition relies on the contrast between the flat, metallic gold surface and the saturated colours of the fans.
On the left panel, a blue and white fan is paired with morning glories, their delicate vines and blossoms rendered with careful observation. The right panel displays a red fan alongside a second fan decorated with a mountain motif, accompanied by small, low-growing plants. Zeshin employs a restrained approach, allowing the negative space of the gold leaf to define the atmosphere. The fans appear to rest lightly upon the surface, creating a sense of stillness and balance.
Zeshin often incorporated elements of the Rinpa school, which favoured decorative motifs and the use of gold and silver backgrounds. His work demonstrates a high level of control, particularly in the rendering of the fan ribs and the organic curves of the plant life. By focusing on these specific objects, the artist invites the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship inherent in everyday items. This print captures the subtle interplay of light on the gold leaf and the precise brushwork that defines Zeshin's approach to traditional subjects. It is an example of the refined decorative arts produced during the late nineteenth century in Japan, where the appreciation for seasonal flora and elegant accessories remained a central theme in domestic interiors.
