A striking woodcut portrait by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring a profile head constructed through rhythmic, geometric hatching.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of the woodcut medium. This work, titled Fantasiekop: profielkop in arceringen, demonstrates his ability to reduce a human form into a series of rhythmic, geometric lines. The profile of the head is constructed entirely through parallel hatching, which creates a sense of movement and structure within the frame. By stripping away realistic detail, the artist focuses on the interplay between light and shadow, using the stark contrast of black ink against the paper to define the features.
De Mesquita often experimented with stylised forms, drawing inspiration from various sources including Japanese prints and the broader European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. His approach to the woodblock is precise, showing a clear understanding of the resistance of the material. The lines are deliberate, carving out the shape of the face while simultaneously creating a decorative pattern that fills the composition. The surrounding dark field provides a heavy anchor for the lighter, linear portrait, pushing the subject forward.
This print is an example of the artist's technical rigour. He avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to let the economy of his marks communicate the character of the subject. The work reflects a period in Dutch art where graphic design and fine art began to overlap, with artists exploring how simple shapes could convey psychological depth. The result is a portrait that feels both modern and timeless, stripped of specific temporal markers. It remains a study in how minimal intervention on a woodblock can produce a compelling visual statement, demonstrating the artist's control over his chosen medium and his unique vision of the human profile.
